Banks set it, and usually say how in the email the statement came with or in the statement settings of online banking. It is commonly built from details such as part of your name, date of birth, or customer or account number, in a format each bank specifies.

Can this unlock a statement if I have forgotten the password?

What unlocking changes, and what it does not

The password and encryption go

The file is opened with your password and saved without its encryption, so it opens anywhere without a prompt, including upload portals and conversion tools that cannot ask for one.

The statement stays the same

Pages, text, and layout are copied as they were. The bank's own document details, such as the producer and creation date, are kept rather than overwritten.

Restrictions removed too

Some statements open freely but forbid printing or copying text. Those restrictions are held by an owner password, and are removed the same way, with no password needed from you.

Only with the real password

Nothing here tries passwords. A wrong one is reported as wrong, and the file stays locked. If you do not know it, the bank's email or statement settings say how it is formed.
