Excel file you download
The Document Center hands you a PDF and stops there.
Citizens keeps roughly eighteen months of statements online, and every one of them downloads as a PDF built for reading, not for adding up. Paste a page into Excel and the transaction date lands as text, the amount keeps its dollar sign, a two-line description splits across two rows, and the running-balance column quietly turns into a number you must not sum. For anything older than the online window (a mortgage file, a loan application, three years of business activity) the archived PDF is all you have, so the cleanup is not a one-off.
How it works
Convert a Citizens statement, screen by screen
- 01
Upload the PDF
Drag in the file straight from the Document Center download, or a scanned branch copy. Multi-page and password-protected PDFs are fine, up to 50 MB.

Drop the PDF in, or forward the statement email from Citizens to your private import address. The run shown here is a Chase statement: the flow is identical whichever bank printed yours. - 02
Confirm the import
Review the queued file and set whether statements carrying warnings still count in your analytics. Nothing is read until you confirm.

The warning types that will still count toward analytics are named before anything is extracted. - 03
Let it parse
Every transaction line is read, the deposit and withdrawal sections are merged into one signed column, and the opening and closing balances are reconciled against the total.

The activity panel names the stage and the seconds elapsed, so a long statement never looks stuck. - 04
Check the rows
A statement that needs attention says so in the library before you open it. Inside, the ledger sits beside the statement page, so you can click a row and see the line it came from and fix anything that needs a human eye before it leaves.

The row under review, boxed in the ledger and in the statement page it was read from. - 05
Export
Download an XLSX for Excel, a CSV for anything else, or a QBO file QuickBooks imports directly.

Excel selected, the columns chosen and ordered, and the rows previewed before the file is written.
Before you convert
How to download your Citizens Bank statement
If the PDF is not on your machine yet, this is the shortest path to it in Citizens Online Banking.
- 1
Sign in to Citizens Online Banking
Use the same credentials as the mobile app. The statement archive lives in the browser experience.
- 2
Open the Document Center tab
Statements, notices, and tax forms are all filed here rather than under the individual account pages.
- 3
Filter to the account and the period
Set the account filter, the type filter, and the timeframe filter to narrow the list down to the statements you want.
- 4
Open the statement and save the PDF
Each statement opens as a PDF you can download. Save the whole file: every page, not a print of one screen.
Citizens keeps about eighteen months of statements in the Document Center; for anything older, use the Contact Us link to request a copy. Business accounts have their own service line for archived statements.
What the conversion actually does
Balances proved, not assumed
The opening balance, the transaction total, and the printed closing balance have to agree. When they do not, you get a flag naming the page, not a spreadsheet that is quietly short a transaction.
Deposits and withdrawals in one column
Statements split money in and money out into separate sections. The export puts them back together as one signed Amount column, so a SUM is the net movement.
Multi-line descriptions kept whole
A wrapped ACH narration that runs across three printed lines arrives as one Narration cell with the reference intact, not as three rows to stitch back together.
Several months in one sheet
Upload a year of statements and export them together. A Source column records which statement and account each row was parsed from.
Card statements too
Citizens credit card statements convert the same way, with purchases signed as debits and payments to the card as credits.
Scans and photographs
A branch copy that was scanned rather than downloaded still reads. Text-based PDFs are parsed directly; image pages go through OCR first.
What converts, and what you get back
| Statement | What comes out |
|---|---|
| Personal checking | Every debit, credit, ATM withdrawal, and fee as one signed row, with the balance reconciled to the printed close. |
| Savings and money market | Deposits, withdrawals, and posted interest, with interest categorized as income rather than a generic credit. |
| Citizens credit cards | Purchases, payments, and finance charges, each with the merchant name resolved from the narration. |
| Business checking | The same rows plus a Source column, so several accounts can be exported into one sheet without losing track of which is which. |
| Scanned or emailed copies | OCR runs before parsing, so a photographed page converts like a downloaded one: slower, and worth reviewing. |
| Formats out | XLSX with real date and number cells, CSV for any downstream tool, or OFX/QBO for QuickBooks. |
FAQ
Common questions
How do I convert a Citizens Bank statement to Excel?
Download the statement PDF from the Document Center in Citizens Online Banking, upload it to BankFlow, let it parse and reconcile, review the rows against the statement page, then export as XLSX. The file has one row per transaction with real date and number cells.
How far back can I convert?
As far back as you have PDFs. Citizens keeps roughly eighteen months in the Document Center, but an archived statement you saved years ago converts exactly the same way: the conversion reads the file, not your online banking session.
Does it work with a scanned Citizens statement?
Yes. Image-only pages go through OCR before parsing. Scans are worth a closer look in review, since a faint or skewed page is where character errors show up.
Can I import a Citizens statement into QuickBooks?
Yes. Export the reviewed transactions as OFX/QBO and import that file directly in QuickBooks Online or Desktop. Categorize before exporting and the categories travel with the file.
Will the running balance column come across?
It is read for the reconciliation check but deliberately left out of the default export, because summing a running balance is one of the most common ways a converted statement goes wrong. You can add it as a column if you want it.
What does it cost to try?
New accounts get 50 free page credits with no card, which covers several statements end to end including the export.
Converting a statement from a different bank?
The same workspace, written up for the format each bank prints.
